Documentation from my Solo exhibition, 50 years living within Foucault’s Heterotopias.
Show ran June 1-10th, 2018. Work was presented in parallel spaces:
ONONO, Wolphaertstraat 41-C, 3082 BL, Rotterdam (4th floor) & Wolfart Project Space vitrine, Wolphaertstraat 25-C, 3082 BK Rotterdam (ground floor) Description:
Over 6 months I produced a body of work combining Michel Foucault, Ursula K. Le Guin and Psychogeographies of Rotterdam.
A foundational text for the show was Michel Foucault's essay, Of Other Spaces: Utopias and Heterotopias, first lectured 50 years ago (1967).
The late Ursula K Le Guin was influenced by Foucault and has been been of great influence for me when looking to the past to re-imagine new futures. I have used their voices to pose questions of Neo-materialism and Intersectional feminism. Explored through foil characters of a doula, translator a registrar. To flesh out politics surrounding birth, bureaucracy of the State, liberation, gender.
This work has been produced researching the Rotterdam city archive, Sadsarchief Rotterdam with material that thinks through Women’s Liberation, sexual revolution, LGBTQI+ rights and forms of intersectional activism during Foucault’s life. Methods of Psychogeography have helped me pave my way.
In addition to a sculpture exhibition, an adjacent publication has also be produced by Publication Studio, Rotterdam. Within this text, matrixial voices can be heard of Hannah Arendt, Deidre Donoghue, Lisa Baraitser, Rosi Bradotti, Paul Preciado and Fred Moten, amongst others.
There was a strong emphasis on Feminist praxis throughout.
This work came out of an O&O grant generously awarded by CBK Rotterdam The exhibition was part of South Rotterdam arts festival CHARLOIS SPECIAAL.
